Cartooning
Back by popular demand! Cartooning is a wonderful means of telling a story or expressing humor in a visual art form. Basically, it is very much like telling a joke, only on paper. Technical emphasis will be on facial expressions and character development, overall visual layout and design, legible lettering, clean inking and presentation, depicting action, and sequential story telling.
Students will be encouraged to develop their own characters and stories to express their own humor and imagination in a form of comic strip, single panel, or comic book. It’s a great opportunity to get “goofy.” Students continuing from last session will have new projects and challenges. Some classic animated cartoons will be shown toward the tail end of classes not only for “earned” entertainment incentive, but to show students how stories are told via facial expressions, action, and sequence and to understand what makes them funny.

This class offers ten classes of pinching, coiling, and sculpting creatures and vessels, then glazing them in a rainbow of colors. We will be making mugs, animals, vases, and more. At the end of the sessions, all pieces will be wrapped for safety and sent home.

Robotics
Each year, robots become more important to our everyday life. NASA uses robots to explore the galaxy, doctors use robots to perform surgeries, manufacturers use robots to build cars, and city planners use robots to build bridges. As technology advances, scientists and engineers are looking to robotics to solve many of the problems concerning our society as well as to better our way of life.
What is robotics? Robotics is the real-life application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To build a robot you not only have to be creative and innovative, but you also have to be able to work in a team to accomplish a common goal.
What will we do at La Entrada? Students will be organized into teams of 8-10 to compete in a robotics competition. 4th – 7th graders will use LEGO Mindstorms ($280+/-) and 8th graders will use the VEX robotics starter kit ($300 +/-) to compete with. Students do not need to purchase a robotics kit as long as they can pair up with another student who does have one.
Each student will get the opportunity to:
- Design, build and program robots
- Apply real-world math and science concepts
- Research challengers facing today’s scientists
- Learn critical thinking, team building and presentation skills
- Participate in a tournaments and celebrations
